According to Voropayev (1997) who studied top Russian kettlebell competitors, 21.2% increased their bodyweight by training with the kettlebell and 21.2% (the exact same percentage!) lost their bodyweight! All this was according to their ideal body composition

Overall the kettlebell is a fantastic fitness tool but not for fitness beginners.
A word of caution
Make sure you can move properly before picking up any weight, especially a dynamic one. Everything changes when you pick up a weight. If you start swinging it about, forces are multiplied by around 5 times the number is on the weight!
Make sure you get professional supervison, especially when beginning with kettlebells.
